Jonah Before

What if I remained?

Hair knit with seaweed,

gray with dying,

lone barnacled prophet

on whale tongue,

black-throated Sheloh.

Is there a prayer

for this? Desire

makes a prayer out of me,

a necklace

of bubbles, rising

with each caught breath

in the sea’s dark flesh:

a pearl.
